You might remember my post from NYC made a few weeks ago and entitled On New York Time. That day, after hours of touristy walking around, my mom and I took a little time to relax in Bryant Park. That’s when we met the talented, New York-born photographer, Rafael Sanchez. He snapped a few shots of me and I liked them so much that I wanted to share them with you in this post. If only for the sake of comparison, I thought it might be interesting to show the end result of the same subject being seen through the eyes of two different people – first my mom and now Rafael. Sort of a new perspective “through the eyes of another.”

New York was hot today in every sense of the word, especially temperature wise. Parades, horses, fake Louis Vuitton bags…you know, everyday stuff. By the time mom and I finished exploring, our feet felt ready to fall off and the idea of posing for another picture evoked a mild allergic reaction. On the whole, our day in New York was a “great success,” despite a horrible map and an unexpected bill of $26 for two glasses of draft beer (Rink Bar at the Rockefeller Center). We did manage to find a restaurant with super spicy food, which I love. Ever since we discovered Khmer Thai Restaurant in Toronto, with their insanely spicy-delicious Cambodian soup, I’ve been a huge fan of spicy everything. I now crave a new approach to spiciness where ever I go. Today New York satisfied my cravings to the point where I couldn’t stop drinking water for half an hour; hot, hot, hot!

Today’s post is a product of just that – a day of looking through Italian Vogue magazines my parents brought back from their last trip to Europe. I’ve been meaning to put this extravagant monstrosity of a dress to use ever since my impulsive purchase a few years ago. Well I guess that the purchase wasn’t entirely impulsive considering that I was quite aware of the dress’s impracticality and flamboyance. I knew that it was bound to be one of those eternally-neglected-items in my closet, but to me it was still interesting and unique enough to outweigh the gloom of the inevitable. I did use it for this shoot after all, and when I look at today’s pictures I begin to fall in love with it all over again. It’s my kind of monstrosity .

By the way, we shot these picture my living-room floor.

The wind posed a serious challenge to my picture-taking experience today because the bow, which is arguably the focal point of this look, just wouldn’t stay in place. What you are seeing here is not exactly what I had envisioned in terms of the dress’s silhouette and composition of the pictures. I was thinking of cleaner, more defined lines which is what I saw in the mirror at home. Under the influence of the wind, the shape of this loose a-line dress and the bow became unidentifiable. Lol, surprisingly nature has no regard for my ‘artistic vision’ (note the sarcasm please). Anyway, “all is well that ends well.” Even though my plan was undermined I’m quite content with the result, especially because I got a chance to wear my new Marni tweed platforms.

These are by far the highest pumps I own. I found a post about these ‘babies’ on another blog where the writer describes them by saying that “the trend towards shape, tailoring, and architecture melds into a houndstooth tweed, leather and wood block heeled platform by Marni.” I read that and thought, “what he said.”

Follow Up: Someone asked me what colour nail polish I was wearing. The brand of the nail polish is Essie and the colour is called Lacy not Racy. Maybe from now on I will start adding this type of information in the “what I’m wearing” part of the posts.

What I’m wearing:

Silk/cotton dress by “Marciano”

Tweed double platform pumps by “MARNI”

Paulette flap clutch by “Cole Haan” (last seen in Mar. 25’10)

Crystal nepal ceylan topaz ring by “Swarovski” (last seen in Feb. 23’10)

I was really in the mood for silks and satins today even though the weather refuses to comply. I bought this skirt over a year ago and it just hung in my closet until today. The main reason for this uselessness was that I had little desire to wear it in its original state. It used to be knee-length actually (here is a picture of a skirt just like it in a different colour). My mom likes to busy herself with sewing or knitting when we watch movies at home together, so a few days ago I gave her another project to work on . I had the idea of folding the bottom of the skirt inward and sewing it onto the horizontal middle seam and the skirt was turned into a mini in the course of one movie. The entire skirt was double layered to begin with so after the adjustment the bottom part became quadruple-layered, giving it something of a tutu-style silhouette. The final result was a little different than I had imagined – more coquettish and girly – but at least I’ll get some use out of it now.

I was taking care of “businazz” all day today; I went through all of my graduate school information forms and booklets and created a schedule for the school open-house visits this spring. I actually can’t wait. I love how in order to get into these competitive schools you need to go though a long, tedious process of applying but once you get it it’s time for the schools to impress you. Once they grant you admission the tables turn and it’s time for you to decide where you will ultimately go. My life seems to have entered a “planning and decision making” phase. One last step before I commit.

Have you notices that ever since Valentines in Montreal all of my look-of-the-day posts have been shot inside? That’s because I’ve been avoiding the snow and cold and waiting for everything to melt and bloom. So I stay indoors thinking of what’s to come, and all to the sound of Sade’s new record playing in the background…so serene.

It’s the international day of love and another perfect reason for fashionistas to dress up in something beautiful. To celebrate, I decided to come to Montreal, Quebec for the long weekend. Aside from the fact that Montreal is more fun than Toronto and that its European-esque scenery is more conducive to the celebration of Valentine’s Day (being more romantic that is), Montreal has some amazing little restaurants that are worth driving five hours for. My absolute favorite restaurant here is Au Pied de Cochon on 536 Duluth Ave. It’s extremely difficult to get a reservation (especially on days like these) but after trying their food you quickly realize why. It’ll make you fall in love all over again!

I wanted to wear something special for my Valentine’s dinner at Au Pied de Cochon; preferably something I’ve never worn before. I first opted for a red Marc Jacobs dress, that has been hanging in my closet for half a year now without getting any lovin,’ but it requires double-sided tape and minor-alteration so I went with this Donna Karan skirt instead. It was so tight that I had to take the tiniest steps to move around. Fitted skirts that restrict your range of motion (such as this one) are exclusively dinner garments. I can imagine trying to dance in it… – a recipe for disaster.

Have an amazing Valentine’s Day everyone!

I’m on my way out to a play at the Factory theatre. I will let you know how it went in tomorrow’s post. This is the look I put together for tonight.

What first attracted me to this Commuun dress was its volume and multi-textured quality. I was shopping with my mom when I came across it. I was surprised to discover that it was my size (36-38) because it looked so wide. After trying it on I came out of the change room to get my mom’s opinion and her first reaction was an “oh,” accompanied by a look of deep contemplation. We then glanced at each other and said “there might be something to it.” The less I thought about its practicality (or lack there of) the more I fell in love with it – a strictly impulsive purchase. What I now appreciate most about the dress is its uniqueness. It’s like nothing else I own; a dress like no other.

What I’m wearing:

I just came back from seeing another show at the COC (Canadian Opera Company). As you probably guessed, tonight’s show was Otello. In contrast to my experience with Carmen, I thoroughly enjoyed this production. The costumes were beautiful, the singing powerful and resonant, and the stage design was original and dramatic. I would even go so far as to say that the show was fully engaging and successful on all fronts. This season might have gotten off on a slow start – first with Stravinsky (enough said) and than their pitiful Carmen – but with Otello the COC finally redeemed themselves.

The only problem for me was that I forgot to bring my glasses. I am pretty dependent on them when it comes to seeing far distances and our balcony seating definitely qualifies. The reason why I forgot them was that this tiny clutch could only fit the opera binoculars and a lip gloss. I was planning on throwing my reading glasses into my mom’s purse. Anyway, I basically had to hold the binoculars to my eyes the entire show. As Desdemona and Otello passionately professed their beautiful love for each other the binoculars fell out of my hands and hit the metal part of the clutch. The noise this commotion produced woke up the elderly lady in the seat beside me. I felt bad for startling her our of her sleep. Puzzled and concerned she turned to me and asked, “What happened?” She was probably hoping that this noise came from Otello killing Desdemona and himself so that we could all go home, but it was just clumsy Lida . So naturally, in response to her question I explained, apologized, and the both of us resumed our previous activity.

We all go to the opera for our own reasons. Some come for the singing, some for the drama, some come to think, some even come to show off those fancy dresses they never get to wear, but there is always that opera-lovin’-bunch who comes for that deep, quality sleep. And I say – as long as there is no snoring involved – it’s all good. Everyone has their own way of appreciating art .

Today’s look of the day is taken from my summer trip to St. Petersburg. We did a lot of touristy things when we were there, which is only right considering that it’s one of the cultural capitals of the world. In these pictures we were visiting the Cruiser Aurora Museum and the Central Artillery Museum. Umm, ships and tanks, how fascinating! There are few things in the world that I find less exiting and to me the experience of being on the Aurora was more sentimental than anything. See, growing up during the years of perestroyka means that certain soviet imagery will forever awaken feeling of nostalgia within you. Standing on the Cruses Aurora did it for me. My whole childhood I heard about this ship and I was finally on it last August. My friend’s little nephew (aka. my little bodyguard) came along with us and he was loving it for a completely different reason. To him it was a new playground; an opportunity for climbing, jumping, hanging, and dangling. To each his own I guess .

The Religion dress that I chose to wear for this activity is a bit paradoxical. It’s completely simple and plain in the front – made out of cotton quite casually and shapelessly. It may look modest at first glance but wait…the whole party is the back. Religion garments are known for these unbalanced and unconventional contradictions. Just when you think you have the girl all figured out she turns around and you don’t know what hit you. Brilliant!
