I hope you had fun and memorable New Year celebrations. For fear of sounding braggy, I’ll refrain from describing the incredible time I had in Lake Tahoe and instead talk a little fashion . Now that we turned the corner into 2012, I find myself thinking about my wardrobe and what new places I want to take it. The following is a summary of the biggest trends for Spring 2012. (1) Pretty pastels are the colour palette this season. Tip: Try playing with light, colour-blocked looks in sweet ice cream shades. (2) Water-world-inspired etherial gowns. The best examples of this trend were the coral adorned dresses of Alexander McQueens collection. (3) Exposed midriff. Tip: Keep the belly button under wraps, exposing just a tasteful flash of skin below the bandeau. (4) Art Deco flapper cocktail dresses. (5) 50s couture shapes.

Haven’t been back more than two months and I’m already getting restless. I have a little trip planned for this winter break and I’ll definitely be packing a few maxis again. A simple long dress can be transitioned from day to evening wear with just a few quick adjustments. Replace the flip-flops with heels, add a statement accessory, pick up your favourite party bag and you’re ready.

As part of the Japanese Business Law class I was taking in Tokyo this summer, we got to visit their patent office and Supreme Court. I welcomed the opportunity to get out of the classroom but the intense heat and humidity of Tokyo summers was making it a little difficult to enjoy wearing business attire. My clerkship in Seoul presented the same challenge of having to dress for the office in the most unconducive weather conditions. I quickly simplified my looks to a light blouse over a silk camisole and a pencil skirt. A sacrifice of one layer needed to be made in the interest of preserving my sanity .

I’m back in California!!! This summer has definitely been memorable – celebrated the completion of the first year of law school in Vegas, visited family and friend in Toronto, took a class on Japanese business law in Tokyo, clerked at a law firm in Seoul, Korea, and spent my birthday vacationing in Thailand. A serious case of jet lag and a few scary credit card bills will never change the fact that this has been the most incredibly epic summer ever!

During the weekdays, my life in Korea is pretty routine. I’m at the office, clerking away Monday-Friday, from 9-6. These are the days of pencil skirts, silk blouses, blazers, and heels. Days of hour-long subway commutes from the apartment to the firm. On the whole, they are days of redundancy. So as you can imagine, I try to keep my weekends as random and free-spirited as possible. This post is a glimpse of last Saturday night, which was pretty much the opposite of how I described my week. I guess you could say that my weekends are in their own shade altogether.

I’m packing my bags and getting ready for Korea. I know it has been three weeks but it feels like I just arrived in Japan. Tokyo is amazing, just so much to do. A return trip is definitely necessary. These pictures are from an Izakaya restaurant where we all went for nomihodai (all you can drink). Combining law students with all you can drink is dangerous. Fun to see such a serious group get loose. Good time for sure.

I’m quickly falling in love with Tokyo. It is by far one of the cleanest and safest cities I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Just to give you an idea of what I mean by safe, one of my favourite things to do here is to go jogging at night through the city…by myself and (as an aside) in the rain. It’s exhilarating! Everyone seems so respectful to, and considerate towards, one another. The first time I went on one of these ‘jogging sight-seeing missions’ I got distracted by a shop and got lost. It felt a little troublesome because everything was beginning to look the same, few people speak enough English to be of help, and I had no money or phone on me, but it still felt too safe to really worry. I will never forget this comfortable feelings in one of the most populous metropolitan centers of the world.

I just handed in a final memo for my Legal Research & Writing class. It feels good to be completely done with something this year. The general feeling of freshness that comes with Spring seems to be inspiring lightness in my outfit choices. I might be going through a “little-dress + statement-necklace” phase. We’ll see where that takes me…
