About four years ago I made up a new tradition for myself. I decided that I would make it a goal to spend every one of my birthdays in a new, preferably exotic place. This is one of my more…”extravagant” traditions – a little ambitious for a student’s budget but somehow I’ve been lucky so far. I figure I’ll just plant the seed and life will figure itself out. Anyway, I spent this year’s b-day on an island in Thailand called Samui and it was incredible. Not only was the island gorgeous, but on the 4th of August I got to ride an elephant, feed a baby tiger, ride on top of a truck (which proved to be more fun than I could have imagined) and eat spicy Top Yum Goong all day. In the spirit of quality tropical vacations, I kept my looks in Thailand casual and light.

During the weekdays, my life in Korea is pretty routine. I’m at the office, clerking away Monday-Friday, from 9-6. These are the days of pencil skirts, silk blouses, blazers, and heels. Days of hour-long subway commutes from the apartment to the firm. On the whole, they are days of redundancy. So as you can imagine, I try to keep my weekends as random and free-spirited as possible. This post is a glimpse of last Saturday night, which was pretty much the opposite of how I described my week. I guess you could say that my weekends are in their own shade altogether.
light monotone
I’m visiting my family in Toronto and trying to savor every moment of it. I wake up early and go to bed late just to make my days longer here. My “day 1″ outfit in T.O. was comprised of a light silk top, cropped pants, and matching heels. I paired this combo with a Chan Luu necklace to break up the monotonality with some color and a touch of crystal. I’m always so inspired in this city…more to come shortly.
unraveling wherever I’m traveling
I don’t know if it’s just within my circle of friends and acquaintances but a lot of people seem to be island hopping and traveling right now. I didn’t get a chance to get my vacationing on this March break but I wanted to make a few resort posts to keep the theme of tropical festivities going, This look is from my last trip to Cuba. I took a plain straw hat and freshened it up a little with a silk scarf and a yellow flower. Now that I think of it, the gold bathing suit and the silk beach top would be perfect for a pool party. Umm, can’t wait for the summer.

On my last trip to the Caribbean I finally figured out that, when it comes to packing for a tropical vacation, the key to selecting appropriate pieces is all in the approach. Actually, the moment that I abandoned my preconceived notions of what vacation clothes should look like is the moment that packing for my trip became truly fun. This time around, as long as it had a looser silhouette, was made of light natural fabrics, and wasn’t some couture treasure I valued more than life, I gave it serious “could-this-work?” consideration. This loose, vintage, silk, shirt meets all this criteria but would’ve likely been neglected in the past. You’d be surprises how much perfect “beach clothes” is in your wardrobe. Next time you’re packing for a vacation, give that silk blouse, shall, or dress a second look. It might be part of your next favorite beach get-up.
