I remember walking into Holt Renfrew in Toronto and seeing the Valentino glossy peep-toe pumps for the first time. The pumps were elevated on a clear display stand and as soon as they came within my line of vision I was completely dumbfounded. I had one of those cheesy, surreal moments as everything went silent and it looked as though crepuscular rays shone on the pumps ever so brightly. All I could do was gasp. To be able to capture elegance and femininity in a shoe so exquisitely… I gained a new level of respect for Valentino that day. This Christmas, Santa was especially generous and brought me two pairs of these signature bow pumps. I must have been a really good girl last year.

The weather was so beautiful while we were preparing for exams that I remember picturing myself by the pool as soon as exams were over. I pictured a bright bikini, a large hat, mohitos, and something festive playing in the background. Well I tried that today, with my Michael Kors straw tote in hand and everything else I described. Only as soon as I just about finished with my set up it started raining. Um, so now I’m inside…still hoping that my dream could materialize today.

The weekend was so action filled that I couldn’t fit it in one post. I needed a break from the books so I rode my bike to the train, train to Berkeley, and then the bike to the sail boat. The weekend involved lots of pedaling…in my tiny shorts and on my gigantic bike.

I absolutely love winters in California. In terms of dressing for the weather, “being safe” when going to school or out to eat basically means bringing a cardigan or throwing a scarf over my top. It never ceases to amaze me how agreeable the weather is here every day. I don’t think I’ll ever fully get used to this luxury. I can’t let myself for fear of missing something.

The premise behind today’s look is a combination of chance, circumstance, and planning. Initially I wanted the We Love Colors feature to be in two parts, with this being the second styling variation of the same dress. And this post still conforms to that plan, to an extent. Only when mama and I came back home and started selecting pictures for the post, we couldn’t help but see certain similarities between some of our shots and the “Swan Princess,” a painting by a Russian artist, Mikhail Vrubel (3rd picture).

What do you think?

Some readers have been asking me to write about how I do my eye makeup and I think the time has come for me to address this question. Personally, I don’t think there is anything particularly exceptional about my application techniques or my choice of colours because I usually just strive for a “clean and simple” effect. I begin by applying a light base of powder eye shadow (by Teye Minerals) on the eye lid from lash line up to eye crease using an all over shadow brush (by Quo). I then use my fingers to apply a cream eye tint (by Becca) to blend a deeper shade into the crease and slightly above it. I use a Becca brow shaping gel for the eye-brows and a Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara for the lashes, which is pretty amazing actually. When I go out, I use Becca’s eye powder control brush to apply Becca’s powder shimmer eyeshadow (in Organza colour; almost white) to the bottom-inside corner of the eye and underneath the brow. This really makes the eyes pop.

Basically I just use a a light pearly colour as the base and add a slightly goldish, creamy colour for the crease, black mascara, and a brow shaping gel. Hope this was helpful.

Thursday: Just Another Banya Day

I hardly slept last night. My mind was flooded with these incoherent, useless thoughts and the more I tried to clear my mind the faster they poured in…pretty counterproductive right? I’m now sitting at the computer and contemplating all the various ways I could feel more or less functional after such a night. Maybe a cup of tea, with honey…maybe lemon? Umm, I can’t believe I’m writing about tea; this just demonstrates the degree to which sleep deprivation hinders your mental faculties . I better just get straight to the point.

For today’s look-of-the-day I took the Autumn Cashmere turtleneck dress and paired it with a simple scarf my aunt knitted. I had this idea of wearing the scarf not just as an accessory but as part of the garment itself. I wrapped it around the neck once and spread the scarf over the front of the dress, holding it in place with the belt. This is yet another way of diversifying your old pieces.

It’s Monday

Today I will be working on finishing off the applications and then going to hot-yoga in the evening. Last night I went to a party and am now sitting in front of the computer with a slight migraine…it was fun though . We were celebrating the birthday of our family friend’s two-year-old son – not quite old enough yet to comprehend exactly why everyone has gathered to shower him with presents and pinch his cute cheeks, but old enough to happily embrace the festivities by dancing and smiling the entire time. Part of the reason that I had a great time myself was because I had a chance to spend some time with their 14-year-old daughter, Olichka, whom I’ve known and loved since she was about 7. It’s amazing to see her maturing into this witty, insightful young woman who will always be the “little-one” to me despite any resistance or sarcasm.

Tutti-frutti Party Dress

For today, my “look of the day” entry will have to be on an outfit I wore in the past (rather then what I’m actually wearing today). I don’t have much time to make a mini-photo session – like the “Kitchen series” of yesterday – because I’ll be shooting another video post today and I had to run a few errands this morning. Interestingly enough, my original intention for the pictures I took yesterday was to snap one shot and to move on with my day. But I don’t know what came over me; I got into this posey model vibe and started busting out all these moves…Anyway, it was pretty fun.

Without further ado, here is the look of the day. I call it “Tutti-frutti” because its the first thing that popped into my head when I thought about describing this look. It is one of my vacation dresses; I could never bring myself to wear it in a non-vacation environment. Somehow it just doesn’t feel right wearing it back home…or maybe Toronto is just not laid-back enough for it.

The picture was taken in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (hence the Hola, get it?).
