Today’s look is a mixture of Proenza Schouler’s mod minimalism and Marni’s eccentricity. I threw in a pair of these dark faux-pearl necklaces for a touch of glam.

My Olympus was acting unusually capricious last night, so I’ll have to take pictures of that look at another time (probably tomorrow).

Last night’s production was pretty thought provoking and engaging. The director and stage-designer did a sensational job at involving the viewer. For example, imagine this, the opera begins with what felt like a 15 minute orchestra intro. The curtains are still closed and, as the melodious sounds are emanating from the pit, the only visual we are presented with is this pseudo-abstract image of what appears to be a human figure. Simply because there is nothing else to distract us from this image, the attention of the audience is indirectly manipulated towards it. What amazed me was that the longer you stared at it, in an attempt to make out its exact subject, the more psychologically immersed you became. Gradually, the music almost begins to dictate “what you think you are seeing.” As we sat there glued to this image and as the music accelerated and intensified, it felt as thought the figures and lines were shifting. Needless to say, it was a little trippy . You begin to doubt your initial assumption and nearly question the idea of “perception” itself. It was brilliant because this tied in so perfectly with the themes and tone of what followed. From that moment on, the audience was hooked. The Flying Dutchman was directed by Christopher Alden and Allen Moyer designed its consumes and set. Their work was beautiful and inspirational.

Today’s look-of-the-day is of what I wore last night to a show at the Factory Theatre. I loved the silhouette produced by the crinoline Zac Posen blouse when paired with a form-fitting tank. It highlights the outlines of the figure in a subtle, understated way. To finish the look, I threw the Proenza Schouler jacket on top of the blouse and mini – in keeping with the blue/white colour pallet and the vertical checks. The Cole Haan flap clutch picks up the colour of the mini while (in texture) conforming to the cubic tenor in the main garments.

On a slightly unrelated note, I really wanted to show you guys this video. The 5-year-old, Savannah is a true fashionista at heart; she takes care of those around her but stays image-conscious under the most dire of circumstances. I love the part where she says, “I don’t know what I’m going to wear”…lol, what a cuttie .

I have a little confession to make. I have always been into sailor-influaenced pieces; white and navy stripped tees, sailboat and anchor pendants, necklaces with large links reminiscent of anchor chains. Without even trying, sailors happen to be a pretty stylish bunch – an inspiration to fashionistas all over the world. Personally I’ve been trying to find a few simple stripped tops for a long while and yesterday I finally did. I rarely walk into H&M but I’ve recently discovered that they have great essential pieces like simple tank and tees. Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that they have awesome navy & white striped cotton tops – simple and soft (exactly what I was looking for). And they are cheap too, ranging from $10 to $15 bucks. I don’t think I’m ready to purchase items like dresses and pants from H&M because I love well-tailored, quality clothes, but I will stay more open-minded about their simple essentials like the top I’m wearing today.

As you might have guessed, I watched the movie “Coco Before Chanel” (2009) last night. It is so relevant to the subject of this blog and I found it to be so inspirational that I decided to dedicate this look-of-the-day entry to “Coco” Chanel. I don’t want to ruin the film for those who haven’t seen it yet, but this woman’s life story and achievements are extraordinary. She was a true fashion revolutionary – “ahead of her time” and fearless in displaying the fact. In the age of excessive extravagance, she argued that ‘simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.’ In our years of postmodernism, we have the multitude of choices when it comes to fashion and style partially because of people like her. I wouldn’t want to take this “freedom” for granted.

P.S. After doing a bit of research about her life (in trying to figure out how much of the movie is factual) I discovered that Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was born August 19, 1883. I found this to be interesting because this means that she was born exactly 100 years before me and we are both Leo’s (trippy but nice ).

I slept horribly last night and haven’t been able to get decent sleep for the past week. I really hope this little phase ends soon. Considering that the way you feel often influences what you chose to wear, I’ll be curious to see what I’ll come up with for today. What does sleep deprivation look like in the fashion world? (lol, hopefully it won’t have to come to that).

Today’s look-of-the-day is of what I wore yesterday. The temperatures are quickly dropping so I suspect that the outfits of the future posts will be progressively more layered. The last picture is of Proenza Schouler’s fashion show. When buying this jacket – before seeing this picture – I thought that it would look best with a short dress (how I plan to wear it in the spring and summer). I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that Schouler and I had the same vision for its use. However, just because the piece is short-sleeved it doesn’t automatically limit it to summer-wear. You can also wear a jacket such as this one over a long-sleeve top (as I had done here) or with shoulder high gloves. Before storing your summer clothes away, ask yourself the question, “can I make this somehow work for fall and winter?” With a little creativity the answer will often be YES!

What I was wearing:

I didn’t have all that much to do today. I just worked on my grad-school applications at home and went out for sushi. This is the look I quickly put together.

I’m wearing:

A jacket by “Proenza Schouler”

A plain long-sleeve top by “Young Fabulous & Broke”

Shoes by “Jonathan Kelsey”

Necklace by “Angie Gooderham”

Skinny jeans by “Denim Birds”

Bag by “Renato Angi Venezia”

The Jonathan Kelsey shoes were new and I have to say – I really like how they feel on. I don’t usually wear bright shoes in the combination that I tried today, but I think it works and I’ll definitely do that again.
