I checked out a new play at the Tarragon Theatre on friday night called Hush. It seemed to possess a bit of surrealist and even Freudian thematic undercurrents as it explored the threshold between dreams and reality. This play was the first Tarragon show for my mom and I really wanted her to like it. Ironically enough, at the end of the play, she was the only one fully satisfied with the experience – go figure (nothing can ever bore this woman). Well…overall the play really was good – the cast was strong and the plot kept you wondering the entire time; trying to decipher the possible meaning of the dreams in the context of the characters’ lives. If psychological enigmas are your ‘cup of tea’ you will love Hush, but if not there is always Communion (which I’m planning on checking out next Friday).

This is what I wore to Hush. Admittedly I looked a little overdressed for the event but that was only because most other people were way too underdressed . For example there was a woman, sitting in the first two rows, who had a huge hole in the back of her shirt. It’s theatre for god’s sake, get with it people .

I adore Maxi dresses and today’s look-of-the-day reflects a little of that adoration. I especially love silk maxi dresses that YA-YA makes because they are always so silk generous and gorgeous. This particular dress is unique in that it’s completely open in the back and has a rope belt that ties and holds the two fold of silk overtop the black layer underneath. I last wore this dress on my trip to Jamaica and its rich layers of silk made me feel graceful and scrumptious ; adding to the pleasure and fun of a night underneath those Caribbean skies.

Notice that this dress is made of the same fabric as the YA-YA slip dress I showed you earlier.

I just came back from having a day of fabric searching on Queen Street. A friend of mine, Liliana, had this interesting idea of us designing and making dresses together as a hobby – sort of an extension of my already existing fashion obsession. I think it’s beginning to consume my life …what do you guys think? What started as an appreciation for beautiful things has metamorphosed into the hobby of (a) collecting them, (b) blogging about them, (c) and now making them. It’s exiting though because we’re full of design ideas and this creative process is adding a new dimension to my appreciation for “the art of it all.”

In today’s look-of-the-day I was planning to tell you about my theatre experience last night but it was quite mediocre. I would rather not bore you with something that’s just “okay.”

Today’s look is of what I wore to meet with Liliana.

What I’m wearing:

Today’s look-of-the-day lingers somewhere in the creamy pearl dimension. The delicacy of the softly quilted crinoline blouse by Zac Posen is given more volume and detail through the velvet trim and underlapping lace. To me, there is something baroque about this interesting piece and I wanted to play on that. The necklace and the multi-strand pearl bracelet are meant to intensify its vintage-inspired quality without being distracting. Admittedly, the long strap of the purse is reminiscent of a different era but I think it still looks harmonious with the other pieces .

BTW, for those who are very familiar with my blog, the change of scenery in today’s pictures are kind of noteworthy (well to me anyway). It’s my room at my parents’ house. I love being here because it’s so “me.” I decorated the room myself and bought all of the furniture pieces, which seemed like a big deal considering that I was paying for my university tuition around the same time. It was worth it though. Now every single item in my room has a story behind it; just like many of the looks I show you guys .

What I’m wearing:

Today’s look-of-the-day is of a fuchsia silk top and white shorts. It’s a vacation look that I put together on one of my trips to Santa Clara, Cuba. I love the combination of long tops and shorts in warm climates; it’s comfortable and leg-flattering. The double-layered silk chiffon creates a feeling of lightness, the fuchsia colour (through its brightness) intensifies the glow and radiance of the skin, and the shorts keep you comfortable and ready to dance. I added the pearl necklace to the look for additional sass and to further unify and relate the fuchsia to the white.

I just came back from having brunch, and let me tell you, the weather in Toronto is unbelievable right now. It’s super slushy and dark. We were planning on walking there but upon hearing the concierge in our building ask us “Do you guys like slushies?” and seeing just exactly what he meant after stepping outside for a second, we quickly turned around and proceeded to walk towards the car. If you are planning on walking further than a few meters in this weather, a full rain get-up (see rain-clothes video) would serve you well on this weather monstrosity of a day. Despite the apparent grayness, I decided to play around with creamy tones today; accentuated by tons of pearl. Notice how Jeremy Laing’s skirt looks on the runway compared with the look-of-the-day version without his jacket. While it might be fun sometimes, in wearing designer clothes you obviously don’t need to replicate the exact vision of its creator. It’s like I always say, “If its on you, its right!”
