We’re at that point in our three week program when everyone seems to be needing time to slow down and relax. We’ve been going a little hard on Japan - staying out at every opportunity and indulging in whatever a student’s budget will allow. But thankfully today Tokyo decided to stop raining long enough for us to enjoy a quiet day in the park. I recently discovered that when you walk into subway stations here, soothing sound effects of birds chirping start playing – so as to relax the passengers while they wait for the trains. How sweet is that? Well if that’s what the subway stations have to offer, you can imagine what the parks are like. These pictures were taken at a shopping district on the way to the park.

My last day on set inspired a few of today’s stylistic choices. For example, one of the other “mobster-girlfriends” had her hair swooped to one side with a large chandelier earring in the exposed ear. It looked so retro and glam that I had to try it myself. I wanted to preserve the softness and lightness of this look, so I opted for a subtler silver, off-white earring, rather than a chunky crystal-encrusted one they used. In order to add some drama to the softness, I also tried the 60s liquid eyeliner look that was carried out so perfectly by the make-up team on set.

How do you guys like that old truck? I find its extreme rusticity almost fascinating. It’s funny how something traditionally thought of in negative terms, like rust, can be almost beautiful and precious when taken to the limit; I guess too much of a “bad” thing can be transforming…at least in fashion.

This colour-happy look is what I wore to work yesterday. The Line, cashmere / modal cardigans is one of my most recent purchases. I bought a few in different colours because I feel that cardigans in general are some of the most essential and satisfying items to have an abundance of. No matter where you live (geographically), layering a sort cardi over your dress, tank, or blouse, makes evenings and air-conditioned spaces instantaneously cozier. Some readers have asked me to dedicate a post to wardrobe essentials for those who want to redefine their style, and it will be coming soon. But until then, I can just tell you that starting with a black, simple cardigan that you love is very helpful; with time, you can add more colourful cardi options that will complete your looks both stylistically and practically.

*I wanted to thank dear Alexandra of To Vogue or Bust for the sweet feature she did on Fashionista Talk.

By the way, have you guys seen Sex and the City 2 yet, and if so, what did you think? I went to see it with a friend while I was in LA and I’m curious to hear your opinions.

I submitted this picture for the Moxsie Sweet Summer Style contest on chictopia. The whole premise behind the contest was to show what your favourite Summer stapes are and how you keep cool in the heat. When I first read what was required I immediately knew that I could contribute because I’m something of a “heat junkie.” The temperature outside can rarely be too high for me and I crave the hottest of the summer days. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the matter, but part of the explanation could be the fact that I’m a fire sign (Leo). But zodiac aside, when I was asked to describe how I stay stylish through the summer this is what I wrote:

“Toronto summers can get pretty hot and humid so my main method for staying cool in the heat is to go bright, short, and natural. As in, mini skirts, shorts, and dresses in natural fabrics that breath – like silk, cotton, and linen. Basically I go light on the fabric and heavy on the accessories. That’s my way of keeping cool.”

Have an amazing day my dear readers. I’m off to banya!

I bought this large beach hat at Century 21 on my last trip to New York. I like to read at the beach and I’ve always wanted an enormous beach hat for sun protection and shade. When packing for California, this hat was neatly folded at the bottom of the suitcase even though the weather forecast didn’t seem too promising. I’m glad I packed it because (as is often the case) the forecast was overly pessimistic. On my second last day in California, a ‘beach’ opportunity presented itself and my new hat and I got a chance to get better acquainted .

It’s damp and grey in Toronto today and I felt like being equally as muted. The Alberta Ferretti top I’m wearing in today’s pictures is actually from my mom’s closet. I ‘borrowed’ it, sort of speak, without her knowing…you think she’ll notice? Considering that she is on the site five times a day and is probably my ‘biggest fan’ I doubt it will get by her . The top has stunning brooch design in the front and is made of the softest cashmere ever – I couldn’t resist.

Today’s look-of-the-day is of what I wore last night to a show at the Factory Theatre. I loved the silhouette produced by the crinoline Zac Posen blouse when paired with a form-fitting tank. It highlights the outlines of the figure in a subtle, understated way. To finish the look, I threw the Proenza Schouler jacket on top of the blouse and mini – in keeping with the blue/white colour pallet and the vertical checks. The Cole Haan flap clutch picks up the colour of the mini while (in texture) conforming to the cubic tenor in the main garments.

On a slightly unrelated note, I really wanted to show you guys this video. The 5-year-old, Savannah is a true fashionista at heart; she takes care of those around her but stays image-conscious under the most dire of circumstances. I love the part where she says, “I don’t know what I’m going to wear”…lol, what a cuttie .

Today’s look-of-the-day is my take on Boho. The aesthetic synthesis we now recognize as the ‘Bohemian style’ has gypsy roots and is often associated with unconventional, artistic lifestyles. Keeping these two facts in mind is particularly helpful when constructing a boho look because they trigger a multitude of mental images and direct associations. Ask yourself the question of ‘what would a gypsy girl wear?’ and you’ll know immediately weather a certain garment qualifies. Their usual characteristics are: (a) loose fit, (b) natural materials, (c) muted tones, (d) flowy silhouettes, and (e) an abundance of accessories.

Now a days, the term ‘Bohemian’ is applied to people who live unconventional, usually artistic lives. Nonconformity is the ever-present undercurrent of this aesthetic movement (if you can call it that), and naturally, the same principal applies in the construction of its looks. Freedom from limits of self-expression is at the heart of this fashion ‘genre’ so explore. For example, play with chunky bangle, large hoop earrings, flowy long skirts and dresses, long tops, flats, or broken in boots. With Boho, fashionable is the anti-fashionable.
