As you might have noticed, the last three posts included the same chiffon, Milly blouse. There is actually a perfectly good explanation for this “un-fashionista-like” behaviour. These posts are part of my Milly Remix Series for the Teenvogue Wardrobe Remix contest. It asked of its participants to choose one piece of clothing they love and style it three different ways, so I chose my beloved sheer blouse. The second requirement was to give tips on how to remix an item like the one we picked and these were my tips for styling a chiffon, sheer blouse such as this one:

1) wear a camisole underneath for more conservative occasions (such as a school events) while opaque bras or tube-tops are great alternatives for parties and get togethers with friends
2) layer an unbuttoned variation of these blouses over a tank for an added touch of femininity
3) think outside the box; the lightness of such blouses is conducive to creativity and play so enjoy layering dresses, cardigans, vests, or overalls over them
4) alternate between tucked and untucked looks because choosing one over the other can make the difference between preppy or edgy chic

*I finally picked up my new, long-awaited pair of prescription glasses yesterday (the same glasses I mentioned in the Weardrobe Explore Interview). It’s so nice to be able to see again!

The last four pictures were part of my submission.

I’m out in New York right now and will post the pictures of today’s look tomorrow. This silk Marc Jacobs dress is what I wore to the last opera of the season, Maria Stuarda. I didn’t want to bother with the parking downtown, so my mom and I decided to take a subway for a change; hence the title.

On the walk over from the subway station to the opera house, I saw a huge flock of birds congregating on the grass by the statue and I thought it might make for a cool shot. I devised this plan to quickly walk towards them, while my mom waits for the perfect moment and snaps a picture of them sporadically, yet collectively flying off. Only I seemed to had forgotten one simple fact. These are Canadian pigeons and they apparently know their right to “lawful congregation.” No matter how quickly or closely I approached, they just kept doing their thing with absolutely no reaction to my presence. (lol) What was I thinking.

We celebrated a friend’s birthday last night so, as you can imagine, I’m a little low on energy today. I felt like wearing something light and delicate so I layered my sheer Etro blouse over a sheer polka-dot dress. The belt softens the transition from the one garment to another while visually separating them at the same time. The top part of the dress conveniently assumes the role of a camisole that a sheer blouse often requires and the bottom is turned into a skit. I’ve never layered sheer on sheer before but I think it works.

I’m leaving for California tomorrow so my day will be filled with errands and packing. Even though the purpose of the trip is to check out three grad schools, I’m in a vacation state of mind and hope to sustain this feeling until it’s time to unpack. I think today’s look encompasses both, my emotional disposition for the day (excited and playful) and the practicality aspect of what needs to get done (comfortable and easy). Pale yellow for the former and bluish-grey for the latter – seemingly conflicting but surprisingly harmonious tones. That’s basically where I’m at today .

I hope you guys all had an amazing weekend. You want to know what I did? I spent the entire time watching Dexter and got through over two seasons. The show is so addictive that it turns you into a degenerate in no time . Considering that I don’t even have cable, it feels strange for me to commit so much time to a tv series. I’ve always been more of a film buff (I even minored in cinema studies in university) but my mama got me hooked on this bloody show. Anyway, for those of you who are familiar with it; is it just me or is the character of Rita (Dexter’s girlfriend) incredibly annoying? What’s up with the constant huffing and puffing? She reacts to the most unpleasant news in the same way as if she just chipped a nail – she literally just inhales or exhales loudly and calls it an emotion or thought. Oops, I’m sorry, I think I’m venting a little. Too much Dexter see…he gets under your skin (get it, because he cuts people).

Today’s look-0f-the-day is not at all related to what I just said. It’s from my trip to Moscow. I generally love simple stripes and for me this Marc Jacobs dress really hits the spot. The only thing is that it was a little windy the day I wore it so as we walked all around the Red Square I had to stay conscious of the potential wardrobe malfunction. I really didn’t want to give those tourists more than they bargained for so I had to be careful the whole time. As you can imagine this wasn’t as relaxing for me as it couldn’t been but it was worth it. As the wind carried and blew the silk into shapes that resembled sails it gave the dress a life of its own – wild and spontaneous. For this reason this “billowing brushstroke-stripe silk dress” is a pleasure to photograph when it’s windy.

Today’s look-of-the-day was one of my favourite to put together. The vintage inspired Gil Carvalho boots are incredibly soft and comfortable, despite the high-heels. Interestingly enough, I bought the Derercuny blouse and jacket separately and without having seen the runway pictures I’ve included in this post. Thus far they are the only Derercuny items that I own, so when I finally looked thorough their collection online I was pleasantly surprised that the two garments were paired on the runway. I love the look of the detailed jacket over the simple blouse, which has these unusually long pieces extended from the collar. I suspect that this was the exact feature that worried and confused most of the potential buyers of the blouse, which is also probably the reason I was able to get it on such an amazing sale. What most would view as a scary inconvenience (I’m still talking about the long pieces on the blouse) I see as an opportunity to play – to reshape the garment with every wear. For example, they can be tied in a bow (as was done on the runway) or wrapped around the neck (as I had done here). What do you like more?

BTW, the last picture is of Becki Newton with the Rolls Royce clutch.

There is a famous saying in Russian that “there is no such thing as bad weather in nature” (the saying loses whatever poetic lyricism it had in translation). I’ve always found this notion to be problematic because it’s so obviously untrue. Living in Canada, I’ve experienced plenty of horrible weather that comes in many different forms. So no, in today’s article I will not be endorsing the “no bad weather in nature” delusion, but rather explore various ways of embracing its disagreeableness by exploiting the fashion possibilities hiding within. In this case we’ll be exploring how we can tastefully deal with the unfortunate phenomena of H2O pouring from the sky. How can we make rain work for Fashionistas.

The answer to this question is simpler than you might expect. As I had mentioned in the video, there are just a few essentials that you need to get through the rainy days while staying dry and stylish. There is the (1) raincoat, (2) rubber rain-boots, (3) rain-shoes (for the hardcore fashion-holics), (4) rubber rain-sandals, and (5) a patent leather jacket.

(1) When it comes to choosing a raincoat, I would stay away from any garments that run above the hip in length. There are both practical and stylistic reasons for this rule. Firstly, a “bolero-style” rain jacket is not going to prevent you from getting wet regardless of how waterproof it is because it’s just not covering enough surface. Secondly, when wearing a dress or a skirt, the look appears cleaner when the bottom of it does not peek out from underneath the coat. Because you would want the coat to be long enough to cover most dresses, I would recommend one that goes a little past the knee (i.e. the Coffee Shop coat I showed you in the video).

(2) Nowadays there is an incredible variety of rubber rain-boots. Some of the best designers are high-fashioning them up by adding their own spin to what used to be just a plain rubber boot. Brands like Burberry, Pucci, Marni, Stuart Weitzman, Chanel, Coach, Marc Jacobs, and many more, are finding ways to brighten up our rainy days. Rain-boots don’t have to be associated with chunky galoshes anymore. They have officially crossed over . Personally, I love bright and funky rain boots for variety; they are young and fun.

(3) Rain-shoes! Even though Marni was not the first to come out with this concept, I think they did it best. The gray rubber and leather Mary-Jane heel shoes epitomize the harmonious blend of fashion and practicality. I wear mine with nude tights and a dress (covered by a raincoat) but look at how wild and unpredictable Marni takes it. All these examples are meant to provide inspiration for what you can do – there is my version on the one side of the spectrum and Marni’s on the other. Maybe you can play around and end up somewhere in between. Just have fun with it.

(4) The rubber sandals are a great summer option for when boots don’t seem as appealing. They are comfy and open, so you can be playful and enjoy those summer rains without any heaviness or stickiness of the boots.

(5) To me patent leather screams “rain on me!,” (lol) even though I’m sure its not good for the leather. So, if you are a fan of umbrellas and have a patent leather jacket you can really work-it when it rains. Don’t be afraid to make a statement even on the gloomiest, wettest of days. A Fashionista is always a Fashionista.

To conclude this article I will leave you with this: “if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

I promised to let you know how the play was last night but unfortunately I can’t. We didn’t get a chance to see it because by the time we got there the play had already begun. I was kind of bummed out about it, but I guess I can check it out sometime during the week. I don’t have much planned for today. Right now I’m just heading out to get a bite to eat. Tomorrow I’ll be making another video-post on cashmere dresses so stay tuned for that.
