I’m quickly falling in love with Tokyo. It is by far one of the cleanest and safest cities I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Just to give you an idea of what I mean by safe, one of my favourite things to do here is to go jogging at night through the city…by myself and (as an aside) in the rain. It’s exhilarating! Everyone seems so respectful to, and considerate towards, one another. The first time I went on one of these ‘jogging sight-seeing missions’ I got distracted by a shop and got lost. It felt a little troublesome because everything was beginning to look the same, few people speak enough English to be of help, and I had no money or phone on me, but it still felt too safe to really worry. I will never forget this comfortable feelings in one of the most populous metropolitan centers of the world.

These pictures were taken on the third day in Tokyo when we finally sat down to do some readings for class.

I finally experienced cold in California, and I must say… It’s wonderful. It’s ironic that it takes the worst California weather to cheer me up the most. The cold outside, the rain coming down, and the sun poking through just enough to remind me of the beautiful days that are just around the corner. Maybe it’s all in my mind, or maybe, just maybe, California is letting me know that everything is going to be alright. Thank you California, I got the message.

It’s going to be all about the juxtaposition of light versus heavy and thick versus thin. Silk dresses with tights and heavy boots, layered with a suede or fur vest. Umm, can’t wait for my vision to materialize. Maybe next week…

For my Russian Readers:

Этой осенью я особенно, тяготею к драпированным силуэтам и я думаю, что у меня скоро созреет свой доминирующий образ данного сезона. Это предположительно будет многослойное сочетание воздушности с солидностью и плотностью – шелковые платья с плотными лосинами и сапогами, замшевые или меховые жилеты. Umm, не могу дождаться материализации моего видения. Возможно, это произойдёт на следующей неделе…

Last weekend we drove to Santa Cruz for a little outing. I am slowly coming to terms with the inevitable season change and its implications (not that I ever had a choice in the matter), and this look is sort of a testament to that. The brown tones, the heavier shoes, long…everything. Mind you the fabrics are still super light so it’s more like I’m easing into fall.

Today a girlfriend of mine told me that it has been exactly a month since we started law school and, as crazy as the experience has been so far, I can’t believe a whole month has passed. Time really does fly when you’re having “fun.”

What I’m wearing:

Silk top by SPORTMAX (last seen in Apr. 4’10)

Linen pants by Elie Tahari

Tweed double platform pumps by MARNI (last seen in May 12’10)

Leather bag by BERGE (as seen in Mar. 17’10)

Large silver sunflower ring (last seen in Sept. 6’10)

Large silver heart ring (last seen in Aug. 20’10)

Silk headband from Club Monaco

Gold vintage brooch (my grandmother’s)

Long necklace

For my Russian Readers:

Постепенно я привыкаю к мысли о безаговорочном приближении осени с соответствующими ей аттрибутами и этот образ тому пример: тут тебе и коричневые тона, и закрытые туфли , и одежда подлинее, но заметьте – ткани лёгкие и полупрозрачные. Если нам от Осени не отвертеться, почему бы не войти в новый сезон »налегке»?

Вот уже месяц прошел с начала учёбы. Предсталяете себе?! Время, действительно, летит незаметно в …«забавах».

This asymmetrical, edgy cotton maxi is my go-to dress when I’m too busy or lazy to put an outfit together. I just throw this oversized baby on and I’m ready for the movies or whatever other relaxed activity I’m getting myself involved in. I’ve definitely put this dress to use in the past and I think it will serve me well when I go back to school but, as much as I appreciate its uniqueness, I never really felt that it was one of my own. All the deliberate little wholes in the fabric leave me feeling kind of sloppy. I catch myself finding one and thinking “What is this, I have to get it fixed” followed by a silly realization of “Oh yeah, that’s part of the design.”

On Sunday we decided to pay yet another visit to the “Starving Artist Bar” for brunch and in tune with its untraditional, edgy vibe, I felt like rebelling against my own natural inclinations and wearing something in a way that is new to me. When looking though my closet(s), I stumbled upon the orange, wrinkled Marni skirt that I used for the Revolve contest and instinctively began to look for some silk top to pair it with. This is where that momentary rebellion kicked in and settled on the Junk Food tee. Over my university years, my collection of Junk Food vintage-inspired, graphic tees grew pretty large but I hardly even glance in their direction now a days. The revival of one of those long forgotten tees, in combination with this wild skirt, culminated in what I call “Marni junk food’ because that’s basically what this look is is in multiples senses of its meaning.

I’m laying out this post in chronological order, with the pictures appearing in sequence of unfolding events. I just had a really crazy day! It all started when, over morning coffee, we spontaneously decided to drive up to New York for a few days of “Manhattanism” – shopping, MoMA, food in the meatpacking district, a Broadway show, etc. I was pretty excited about the idea, so I tried to get as much done as possible during the day in order to make it happen (boring errands mostly).

What I wore for most of the day:

Cotton, high-waisted skirt from “Urban Outfitters”

Tank – top by “Theory”

Nude heels by “Elie Tahari” (last seen in May 25’10)

Long fish necklace by “Pellini Italy” (last seen in May 18’10)

18 bangles by “b-side by ken & dana”

Grosi gathered leather sac by “Malababa”

Sunglasses by “MARNI”

We were packed and ready to go by about 6pm. There is this old Russian tradition/superstition that requires everyone to sit down together quietly before going on a long trip. The silence usually lasts no longer than a few beats, but apparently this is sufficient for a safe and successful journey. Anyway, as soon as my friend, mom, and I finished this little ritual, it suddenly dawned on us that my mom should come along. Her easy-going and pleasant disposition makes her one of the most fun people to travel with, so the very idea made me giddy with joy. It didn’t take much convincing before we threw another suitcase into the trunk.

Exhilarated and ready for the road, we finally took off for the Big Apple. Are you ready for the climax…the car broke down about a kilometer away from the house. The three of us then hitched a ride with the tow-truck driver that was taking the car to the shop, got into my dad’s truck, and hit the road ‘déjà vu ‘ style. We then came across a jewel of a grocery store the name of which all the Russian speaking readers should appreciate (lol) – any girl’s dream! Ironically enough, as I came out to take a picture of this supermarket-wonder-of-the-world, one of my heels broke right off. Believe it or not, it is the second time this happened with these relatively new, Modern Vintage pumps; they’re made in Italy too – go figure. I guess a girl can’t have it all. What’s it going to be, a supermarket of “long hui” or shoes. I don’t know about you girls but I’m torn (no pun intended).

So here we are, driving into the dark night with my cashmere socks on the dashboard and a full moon over our heads.

My day started pleasant and slow enough, but turned into a “marathon” right after breakfast on our practically shadeless backyard patio. First it was the yogafusion, which seemed more intense and painful than ever. From class I drove straight to my hair appointment, bank appointment, auto body shop, grocery store, and then straight home to get ready for the last opera of the season, sushi, and now the post. The 34C and humidity didn’t exactly help the matter but in the end it was an amazing day actually. My little car and I got to spend some quality time together – windows down, old-school hip-hop tunes, the breeze. By the way, apparently today’s Toronto weather broke records for the highest temperatures on May 26 since 1937. I’m glad my Acura and I were there to witness this historic warming moment.

I called today’s look “the shell game” because of its unconventional statement piece. My crafty mama made this immoderately long shell necklace from about 5 regular sized necklaces bought on our last family trip to Cuba. Originally they all came in single tones and we had the idea of mixing together the colours and the necklaces themselves into one long, colourful piece. We couldn’t find much use for them in their original state because, quite frankly, they looked a little too boring and safe. When I saw the end-result I couldn’t wait to put it to use and today’s weather and summer vibe presented the perfect opportunity.

My dear Cuba,

If I can’t come to you, I’ll have you come to me.

Love,
Lida

I’m still lusting after colour…and then some more colour. Lately I’ve been craving unusual combinations so when it was time to style my fuchsia Stella McCartney dress, I instinctively reached for more untraditional tones. A few years ago, I probably wouldn’t have even considered accessorizing this dress with such crazy-large, blue bangles but to me colour limitations are now just that – limitations.

When I was growing up in Moldova, we had very few choices when it came to clothes and fashion. Most people had so few clothes that I could remember them by their token garments. For example, there were some girls in my class who would literally wear the same skirt or dress everyday, so seeing that floral burgundy dress in motion from a distance meant that Mila was coming. This might sound crazy but it was just the norm. Anyway, despite obvious shortages in the clothing department, people had pretty strong opinions about how clothes should be paired and what colour combinations are no-nos. When I was a kid, this list seemed so extensive that the idea of combining colour became almost scary. But a few things were clear though: red/black, blue/white, pink/pink where considered untouchable so that’s mostly what you saw. How contrived is that?

Needless to say, there are no limits whatsoever when it comes to colour. If you think the tones work together, then pair them. Enjoy that postmodernist fruit – it’s sweet and juicy.

What I’m wearing:

2 barbed wire, large bangle by “Luc Kieffer”
