Let me just begin by saying that I’ve never had so much fun taking pictures as I did with this “future is vintage” mini-shoot. Everything just seemed to fall into place and the weather was for once in complete compliance – just sunny and windy enough. I’ve had this YA-YA open-back maxi dress for a few years now, but today was my first time wearing its sash tie belt tied into a bow in the back instead of a knot in the front. Because of the relatively loud statement necklace, I wanted to simplify and clean up the rest of the ensemble while keeping the look boho-chic. This is were the leather flat sandals and the silk scarf came in. I wrapped the scarf over my head for a complete “summer in Dubai” feel and then intensified this theme with easy flat sandals.

I remember telling my bro, Taras, that the inspiration behind this look was this image I had of what it would be like to vacation in hot Dubai in the summer. I imagined myself sitting in some smoky canopy patio of a Dubai caffe, lounging in this dress with my head thrown back – just hanging out in the heat like a lazy sloth, chilling in the sweat of it all. This image seemed so fabulous and exotic until Taras had to kill it for me by saying, “I don’t think this get up would go over too well in Dubai. The only realistic part of that story is the one about heat and sweatiness.” Oh well, he is probably right, but the image was still inspirational while it lasted.

Things are quickly warming up in Toronto as the weather improves and everyone gets into a spring state of mind. Skirts and shorts get shorter, dresses lighter, and tones brighter. I can’t wait to put away the last of my winter clothes and only have to choose from silks, cottons, and linens. I consider today’s ensemble a transitional one. Its short but somewhat strict, not quite heavy or light, not only black but white, with accents gold and bright. Wow, some unexpected armature poetry for you guys. As big of a surprise to you as it was to me. Oh, those spring surprises…

Today’s look-of-the-day is once again predominantly silk and satin but it also brings us to a new topic. Today is my first time wearing this coat-dress by Noir primarily because of its length. Just out of curiosity I tried it on a few days ago with my Miu Miu skirt but after a quick glance in the mirror the “length theory” was confirmed. Length does matter when it comes to creating harmonious combination. If the skirt is substantially longer or shorter than the coat the effect is sloppy and unbalanced. The only exception is when it comes to mini skirts because they are in a category of their own. You can wear a tiny mini with a long trench and look seductive and playful. However, if the length of the skirt is neither here nor there and it looks as though it would line up with the coat if not for those “extra few inches” then I would wait until I had a match or alter one of the garments. This morning I was pleasantly surprised to discover that no only did the texture of the Religion dress compliment that of the dress-coat but their lengths were also a fit. The visual lines crated by the length of a garment greatly contribute to its silhouette and should not be regarded lightly.

I will be publishing a new video today on gloves. I hope you’ll find it useful. Today’s look-of-the-day is of a pinstripe wool dress that includes an inner boned corset and the Dolce & Gabbana signature touch – the exposed metal zipper. The tone of this dress exudes an element of conservatism and strictness that is quite unusual for its designers and I wanted to both playfully highlight and modify this quality; hence, the necklace. The necklace is an embodiment of aesthetic contradiction. It’s a loose choker made of plain rope, crocheted girly trim, pearl beads, and a rough safety hood locking it together in the back. The layered metal chains in the shoes and this multifaceted statement necklace moderate and funkify the look, while staying within the realm of elegant refrain.

As you may already know, Thursday is my Russian spa day with mom. I tried out that new fitness class last night, kama aerobics, and it was better than I had expected actually. It was really oriented towards female sensuality, which was mostly expressed through sexy belly-dancing moves and booty shacking…fun .

Today’s look-of-the-day is what I was wearing yesterday. In putting this look together I followed my first instinct of wanting to breath life into something in my closet that has been long-forgotten and neglected. Sometimes I like to do this as a way of rediscovering the beauty in something, and the bigger the apparent challenge the more satisfying it is in the end. In this case it was the pink blazer. I’ve had it for over 3 years and never wore the poor thing. To me, it always carried an air of classicism (formal and restrained) that both attracted and turned me away. But after spicing it up with the jewelry, some of that formality is softened.
