All of your sweet birthday wishes sent out so much positive energy into the universe that my b-day turned out amazingly, despite the intense moving preparations and general craziness of my last day in Toronto. The day started with a birthday brunch at a creperia, followed by unavoidable hours of packing and case reading, and ended with dinner and drinks on McCaul St. I love starting new, often challenging to follow traditions like celebrating each one of my birthdays in a new country and in a new dress. I broke with tradition this year with the whole country thing, but my dress was brand-spanking new and shiny, so it sort of counts.

As you might have guessed, these are my birthday pictures and this 80s inspired number is the dress in question. In the spirit of festive indulgence, I accessorized the dress to the fullest, with a wide belt, a statement necklace, large metal bracelets, and a chunky ring. On your birthday anything goes!

I’m now on day one of the longest road-trip of my life (thus far). We are currently driving though Michigan towards Chicago, still thousands of km from California.

What I’m wearing:

Dress by “Zero”

Leather belt

2 large metal bracelets by “Ben-Amun” (last seen in July 23’10)

Chunky silver flower ring (last seen in July 11’10)

Vintage brass bracelet

I submitted this picture for the Moxsie Sweet Summer Style contest on chictopia. The whole premise behind the contest was to show what your favourite Summer stapes are and how you keep cool in the heat. When I first read what was required I immediately knew that I could contribute because I’m something of a “heat junkie.” The temperature outside can rarely be too high for me and I crave the hottest of the summer days. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the matter, but part of the explanation could be the fact that I’m a fire sign (Leo). But zodiac aside, when I was asked to describe how I stay stylish through the summer this is what I wrote:

“Toronto summers can get pretty hot and humid so my main method for staying cool in the heat is to go bright, short, and natural. As in, mini skirts, shorts, and dresses in natural fabrics that breath – like silk, cotton, and linen. Basically I go light on the fabric and heavy on the accessories. That’s my way of keeping cool.”

Have an amazing day my dear readers. I’m off to banya!

I think the weather in Toronto is in a strange state of confusion today, which inadvertently drags us into the same predicament. Ever since this morning, it felt and looked as though thunder showers are on the verge of breaking out any minute now but there hasn’t been a drop in sight. Talk about deceptive appearances… If I had to give you an analogy I would say that this weather is like a spoiled six-year-old girl who is just about to start wailing and has sustained that painfully wrinkled look of dissatisfaction on her face for hours. It’s like that “I’m about to start yelling face” is frozen in time for all of us to ‘enjoy.’ Anyway, I didn’t want to risk testing the ‘magic of irony’ today so I kept today’s ‘mini-shoot’ indoors.

We celebrated a friend’s birthday last night so, as you can imagine, I’m a little low on energy today. I felt like wearing something light and delicate so I layered my sheer Etro blouse over a sheer polka-dot dress. The belt softens the transition from the one garment to another while visually separating them at the same time. The top part of the dress conveniently assumes the role of a camisole that a sheer blouse often requires and the bottom is turned into a skit. I’ve never layered sheer on sheer before but I think it works.

On the way to the Buffalo airport this morning my parents and I decided to swing by Niagara Falls. Considering that Toronto is so close to Niagara, I’ve been there a few times before but it was never like this. I’ve discovered that experiencing the falls on a spring, weekday morning is a rare treat in itself. This insanely beautiful wonder of the world was entirely tourist free. Niagara was left to its own enchantments and magic (before we invaded it of course). It felt as though we had the falls to ourselves – surreal.

The shorts I’m wearing today have a story of their own. As you might have guessed, they used to be jeans with rips at the knees. I loved these Aberctombies but they quickly went from ‘distressed’ to plain stressed and tired. The rips got bigger with every wear and I figured it was time to put them out of their misery. Shortly after this realization, they had some ‘quality time’ with my scissors and the jeans where never the same again. This morning these ‘shorts’ popped into my head and I decided it was time for a revival. They are now knee length so I rolled them up for a more finished look.

I guess it’s true what they say…never give up on those you love .

What I’m wearing:

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it before that Stella McCartney is one of my favorite designers. There is an element of freshness and spontaneity in her work – a feeling of ease and fluidity. Today I wore her girlish organza blouse by tying a small knot at the bottom and tucking the knot into her low-rise, zipper pants (this partial tucking-in is something I started doing recently).

This is basically where Stella gives things over to Amber. I accessorized these garments with a chunky amber necklace that my mom and I made from a number of my grandmother’s small amber strands. But I wore it rather unconventionally today because instead of using the hook and wearing it as a triple-strand, I hung it vertically over my neck. It ended up looking like a super long necklace with one strand of amber on top and two at the bottom. If you watch the Gloves video this might become clearer.

What I’m wearing:

Amber ring (made it myself) (as seen in Feb. 1’10)

The amber necklace and the bag were featured in my video on Gloves. Here it if for those who haven’t seen in it:

I hardly slept last night. My mind was flooded with these incoherent, useless thoughts and the more I tried to clear my mind the faster they poured in…pretty counterproductive right? I’m now sitting at the computer and contemplating all the various ways I could feel more or less functional after such a night. Maybe a cup of tea, with honey…maybe lemon? Umm, I can’t believe I’m writing about tea; this just demonstrates the degree to which sleep deprivation hinders your mental faculties . I better just get straight to the point.

For today’s look-of-the-day I took the Autumn Cashmere turtleneck dress and paired it with a simple scarf my aunt knitted. I had this idea of wearing the scarf not just as an accessory but as part of the garment itself. I wrapped it around the neck once and spread the scarf over the front of the dress, holding it in place with the belt. This is yet another way of diversifying your old pieces.

What I’m wearing:

Today I will be shooting another video-post that will be on beaded-dresses. I think it’s appropriate to cover some more “dressy, party” topics considering the holiday season and all. Hopefully it will present you with some ideas about what to wear to a New Years party or a Christmas dinner. These are pretty major occasions so lets consider all the options.

Today’s look-of-the-day is of what I was wearing yesterday (I promise to catch up soon). Sometimes when I look at the way the outfit turned out on the pictures I get more ideas about what I can do differently with it in the future. After looking at this particular outfit, it occurred to me that maybe I could try wearing this coat with a belt; I have my doubts about the notion because it is so wide at the waist, but I think it’s worth a try (stay tuned for that experiment).

Here is what I was wearing:

Suede coat by “Isaac Sellam”

Necklace by “Ben-Amun”

Bracelet by “Ciro”

Silk top by “Rory Beca”

Pants by “Stella McCartney”

Shoes by “Guillaume Hinfray” (as seen in Nov. 20)

Leather belt by “Forty-Nine Square Miles (SQ MI)” (as seen in Nov. 24)
