Their designer Stacey Bendet’s says that “These clothes are fun…they’re like candy” and that’s exactly how it feels to wear my Alice+Olivia heart dress; like I just had a sugar rush.

So what do you guys think of the first phase of the new design? The change might seem a bit sudden but it has been in the works for a long time. My dear brother, Taras, had to put up with a lot of bugging on my part. He redesigned and developed the entire site from scratch and I’ve officially gotten my whole family involved in the blog. But as a result, some of the new functionality includes the ability to leave comments for individual pictures (as well as the post itself), the main page includes multiple pictures along with the larger, featured image, and “previous looks” are more visible. And this is just the beginning…I’m big on evolution.

* I know that there are still glitches with some of the functionality of the site but we are continuously working on fixing everything and making it more user friendly. Thank you for your patience and support my dear readers. I will really miss you in Cuba .

Today’s post is the second part of the tri-post tribute. This dress has sentimental value to me because it’s the first, and thus-far, only garment by Alexander McQueen in my personal collection. I wanted to style it here in his memory as part of my humble little tribute to McQueen. I kept it simple and clean in the front and paired it with nude heels so as not to distract from the lines and beautiful tailoring of the dress. It appears relatively conservative and elegant at the front but the extravagant open-back design daringly defies this initial impression – with a bit of that shock-factor that Alexander McQueen was always so good at. By adding the Swarovski scarf necklace, I wanted to intensify that sense of contrast and glam. Elaborate headwear had always been such a significance element of McQueen’s designs that I tried to create a bold headpiece as an allusion to that.

I read somewhere that throughout his career McQueen was very progressive in his approach to sewing and tailoring techniques and that he hated seams and tried to have as few of them as possible. After reading that, I took a look at my dress and I noticed that there really are less seams and their placement is quite unusual. I bought the dress on ebay a few years ago, and I will forever cherish its every unconventionally sewn inch.

(The last two pictures are of similar garments from the same Fall 2004 collection)

What I’m wearing:

Headwrap (I put it together out of simple interfacing material and safety pins)

The premise behind today’s look is a combination of chance, circumstance, and planning. Initially I wanted the We Love Colors feature to be in two parts, with this being the second styling variation of the same dress. And this post still conforms to that plan, to an extent. Only when mama and I came back home and started selecting pictures for the post, we couldn’t help but see certain similarities between some of our shots and the “Swan Princess,” a painting by a Russian artist, Mikhail Vrubel (3rd picture).

Today’s post is a product of just that – a day of looking through Italian Vogue magazines my parents brought back from their last trip to Europe. I’ve been meaning to put this extravagant monstrosity of a dress to use ever since my impulsive purchase a few years ago. Well I guess that the purchase wasn’t entirely impulsive considering that I was quite aware of the dress’s impracticality and flamboyance. I knew that it was bound to be one of those eternally-neglected-items in my closet, but to me it was still interesting and unique enough to outweigh the gloom of the inevitable. I did use it for this shoot after all, and when I look at today’s pictures I begin to fall in love with it all over again. It’s my kind of monstrosity .

By the way, we shot these picture my living-room floor.

This purple little garment has an identity crisis. It’s being worn and accessorized as a dress while it’s not a dress at all…but a long, fold-over skirt. I remember first seeing it in the sale section at Marciano, neglected and passed over by most. At the time I wasn’t crazy about the idea of a maxi skirt either but I was immediately drawn to its colour. After a few minutes of experimentation in the change room the skirt was redefined and I became one dress richer.

It was sunny and beautiful that day but still a little chilly, so I paired my cream Robert Rodriguez dress with a large pocket spring coat and a pastel blue cashmere cardigan. The schedule of the open-house was pretty intensive but mom and I were still able to find 15 minutes for a Starbucks and mini photo shoot break.

What I found to be most impressionable about Cleveland had less to do with the city itself or even the school I visited than with its people. I was in complete awe of how genuinely friendly and pleasant everyone was. It’s probably the most welcoming city I’ve ever been to and the best part is that this warm disposition of its residents is contagious. Needless to say, the visit was thoroughly enjoyable.
