I can’t wait to play around with texture juxtaposition this spring – mixing soft and feminine with tough, waist-attenuating leather. This post is part one of my pre-spring experiment. A sheer chiffon blouse worn over a polka dot pink bra and tucked into a leather pleated mini.

Street Fashion Week Game

I got a message from sweet Maria, of Chicisimo, asking me to be a co-organizer of a “Street Fashion Week” game. I’m not impartial to fun little challenges like these, especially when they are fashion related, so naturally I had to take part. And I think you should too! The premise of the game is to show what you would wear to Fashion Week in your country. The look with the highest number of votes will get a beautiful flower bouquet and will be featured throughout Chicisimo. This is a stylish and fun “competition” among countries all over the world and it would be amazing if a Canadian fashionista would win, so lets get to representin’.

behind the scenes

Yesterday I did some modeling for Foxy Originals upcoming catalogue and I snapped a few behind-the-scens shots to share with you guys. The shoot had a Burlesque theme to it so my makeup and hair was very big and bold for most of it. Unfortunately my sidekick photographer (aka. mama) wasn’t there to take pictures of me in wardrobe, so it’ll have to wait until the catalogue comes out. But one of the super sweet owners/jewellery designers of Foxy, Suzie, snapped this shot of me before we got started. The flash of my camera triggered all of the flashes in the studio and vuala…I’m a Burlesque librarian in heaven. Thanks Suzie and Jen for making the shoot so laid-back and cool for everyone, and that pizza was delish!

Happy Canada day everyone! I might wear a white dress for the day with some red stilettos…we’ll see.

Some readers have been asking me to write about how I do my eye makeup and I think the time has come for me to address this question. Personally, I don’t think there is anything particularly exceptional about my application techniques or my choice of colours because I usually just strive for a “clean and simple” effect. I begin by applying a light base of powder eye shadow (by Teye Minerals) on the eye lid from lash line up to eye crease using an all over shadow brush (by Quo). I then use my fingers to apply a cream eye tint (by Becca) to blend a deeper shade into the crease and slightly above it. I use a Becca brow shaping gel for the eye-brows and a Kiehl’s Marvelous Mineral Mascara for the lashes, which is pretty amazing actually. When I go out, I use Becca’s eye powder control brush to apply Becca’s powder shimmer eyeshadow (in Organza colour; almost white) to the bottom-inside corner of the eye and underneath the brow. This really makes the eyes pop.

Basically I just use a a light pearly colour as the base and add a slightly goldish, creamy colour for the crease, black mascara, and a brow shaping gel. Hope this was helpful.

Leopard Chiffon

I am officially contemplating going away on a vacation soon, and along with these exciting thoughts comes a new phase in this blog. Early next week I will be publishing the first episode of a three-part series on vacation related topics. Travelling is one of my biggest passions and I could easily make this a ten part series, but I’ll try to practice moderation and be as concise as possible. Stay tuned for this new development and I will tell you everything you need to know about getting the most out of a resort vacation, while being fabulous the whole time through.

In line with this announcement, I thought it would be appropriate to make today’s look-of-the-day about something I wore on a vacation. This silk, leopard-print dress served me well on my trip to Jamaica and Cuba and is a good example of the type of garment you will love wearing on those hot vacation nights. Interestingly enough, I have never been a fan of leopard-print and find it to be the tackiest and most desperate of patterns. It’s especially disturbing to see leopard on young girls – it just seems so clashing and contradictory. It is one thing to see it on a woman of a ripe age with a sexually aggressive disposition (Samantha on Sex in the City) but quite another on a teenager with braces. With that said, I am wearing leopard print here because the pattern of this dress is subtler than what you would generally associate with this print and it’s on silk chiffon. Fabrics and the silhouette make a huge difference for the kind of impression the print makes. If the dress is a leopard-print, skin-tight, polyester or nylon monstrosity, even Dolce & Gabbana would have a hard time making it look worth over $29.99.

So in choosing whether to go with that leopard-print garment use your desecration. Fashion is not about rules but you have to be conscious of the kind of impression the look makes. You wouldn’t want your leopard to scare those around you, even if the animal is in its element; be it the tropics or the bedroom.

Pinstripe Glam

I will be publishing a new video today on gloves. I hope you’ll find it useful. Today’s look-of-the-day is of a pinstripe wool dress that includes an inner boned corset and the Dolce & Gabbana signature touch – the exposed metal zipper. The tone of this dress exudes an element of conservatism and strictness that is quite unusual for its designers and I wanted to both playfully highlight and modify this quality; hence, the necklace. The necklace is an embodiment of aesthetic contradiction. It’s a loose choker made of plain rope, crocheted girly trim, pearl beads, and a rough safety hood locking it together in the back. The layered metal chains in the shoes and this multifaceted statement necklace moderate and funkify the look, while staying within the realm of elegant refrain.

Coco Before Chanel

As you might have guessed, I watched the movie “Coco Before Chanel” (2009) last night. It is so relevant to the subject of this blog and I found it to be so inspirational that I decided to dedicate this look-of-the-day entry to “Coco” Chanel. I don’t want to ruin the film for those who haven’t seen it yet, but this woman’s life story and achievements are extraordinary. She was a true fashion revolutionary – “ahead of her time” and fearless in displaying the fact. In the age of excessive extravagance, she argued that ‘simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.’ In our years of postmodernism, we have the multitude of choices when it comes to fashion and style partially because of people like her. I wouldn’t want to take this “freedom” for granted.

P.S. After doing a bit of research about her life (in trying to figure out how much of the movie is factual) I discovered that Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was born August 19, 1883. I found this to be interesting because this means that she was born exactly 100 years before me and we are both Leo’s (trippy but nice ).

It’s Monday

Today I will be working on finishing off the applications and then going to hot-yoga in the evening. Last night I went to a party and am now sitting in front of the computer with a slight migraine…it was fun though . We were celebrating the birthday of our family friend’s two-year-old son – not quite old enough yet to comprehend exactly why everyone has gathered to shower him with presents and pinch his cute cheeks, but old enough to happily embrace the festivities by dancing and smiling the entire time. Part of the reason that I had a great time myself was because I had a chance to spend some time with their 14-year-old daughter, Olichka, whom I’ve known and loved since she was about 7. It’s amazing to see her maturing into this witty, insightful young woman who will always be the “little-one” to me despite any resistance or sarcasm.
