Now that exams and out of the way and I’m officially on break, I can finally resume my FashionistaTalk responsibilities. I feel a little guilty for neglecting them the last couple of weeks, so hopefully this giveaway will help smooth things over . We’ll see. This month’s giveaway is a whimsical, suede Marc Jacobs Rolls Royce Clutch. It seems like such a sly throwback to a bygone era that I find it charming and smart. The retail value of the clutch is $925. The giveaway is open to everyone and will close on Jan. 31’11. Good luck my lovelies.

I have this vivid memory in my mind of childhood moments when the act of dress-up seemed to possess transformative, almost magical powers – an element of the “unknown” that seemed so quintessentially grown-up yet playful. Sometimes when I was left home alone to my own devices, I would put on my aunt’s highest platforms (she lived with us for a while), pull on my mom’s puffiest skirt, and as carefully as possible try to apply the reddest lipstick I could find. I would twirl around in this get-up, doing circles in our tiny apartment, until the doorbell rudely interrupted this “ritual.” At that point, the skirt, lipstick, and platforms would come off at the speed of light, and I opened the door with that innocent smile on my face that eight-year-old girls are so good at faking. Privet!

The feeling that the twirling produced was the inspiration behind today’s look. That feeling of overwhelming enchantment with something that is not quite your own…yet.

Interestingly enough, now that I look at these pictures, the outfit kind of reminds me of Samantha from SAC. This is my first Balenciaga dress, which I purchased a week ago and couldn’t wait to put to use. No matter how bold a garment might seem, being able to throw something on and play Samantha, or whoever else, makes the life of a fashionista that much more colourful.

P.S. The last picture is of my dear mama. Whenever she sees a camera pointing in her direction she usually hides or waves her arms around like she’s allergic or she’s being attacked by an army of angry wasps, but I managed to snap this shot and miraculously she didn’t hate it so…here she is .

As you might have noticed, the last three posts included the same chiffon, Milly blouse. There is actually a perfectly good explanation for this “un-fashionista-like” behaviour. These posts are part of my Milly Remix Series for the Teenvogue Wardrobe Remix contest. It asked of its participants to choose one piece of clothing they love and style it three different ways, so I chose my beloved sheer blouse. The second requirement was to give tips on how to remix an item like the one we picked and these were my tips for styling a chiffon, sheer blouse such as this one:

1) wear a camisole underneath for more conservative occasions (such as a school events) while opaque bras or tube-tops are great alternatives for parties and get togethers with friends
2) layer an unbuttoned variation of these blouses over a tank for an added touch of femininity
3) think outside the box; the lightness of such blouses is conducive to creativity and play so enjoy layering dresses, cardigans, vests, or overalls over them
4) alternate between tucked and untucked looks because choosing one over the other can make the difference between preppy or edgy chic

*I finally picked up my new, long-awaited pair of prescription glasses yesterday (the same glasses I mentioned in the Weardrobe Explore Interview). It’s so nice to be able to see again!

The last four pictures were part of my submission.

I was going to wait until tomorrow to make this post but I have so many fun looks lined up that I couldn’t resits moving things along. With this outfit, I wanted to put that “scandalously short silhouette” I talk about in the last post into action. I bought this long Miu Miu top (or short dress, depending how you look at it) on ebay a few years back, and it wasn’t until I began compiling pictures for the Miu Miu inspiration post that it occurred to me that if Miuccia Prada wanted ‘short’ than ‘short’ it shall be. I decided to preserve the clean lines of the garment, without any distraction that a belt or jewelery piece would impose. I wanted to highlight the exquisite tailoring of this Miu Miu piece, so layering for me was also out of the question. Once I had a rough image in my head of what I envisioned for this look, the challenge was its materialization without giving over to practical compromise.

The French Connection, high-waisted shorts (which you can’t really see here), turned out to be the perfect fit, height, and length for the job. The shoes added a little retro feel to the mix and the headband came in last, once I felt that something was missing. I can’t wait to wear this to some summer party, with a little more tan and a margarita in my hand.

The last picture is of the same top seen on the runway of the 2008 Spring collection.

What I’m wearing:

A few days ago I paid another visit to the Four Seasons Centre to see Idomeneo – an opera I knew nothing about. To me, its most memorable features were the emotional intimacy and grandeur of the music (I guess they call it Mozart’s masterpiece for a reason), the mythological plot, and the powerful cast. I didn’t have time to even glance at the program because the lights were already dimming as we frantically rushed to our seats (no matter how much I try to prevent this, we tend to be “fashionably late” to these things, which is pretty “unfashionable” when it comes to theatre considering that half of the row needs to get up to let you through). Anyway, after seeing enough operas their plots become pretty predictable and you know what to expect of the endings - someone is going to die a horrible, miserable death. But apparently not in Idomeneo. It was so surprising and refreshing that every character not only survived the course of the opera but was happier by the end of it. And it was based on Greek mythology – go figure…I guess those vicious gods took it easy for once.

The day of the opera I was busy working on the blog, kind of lost track of time, and started getting ready only about 15 minutes before leaving. For moments such as these I usually pick out a dress that is embellished enough for me not to have to worry about accessorizing. This Alberta Ferretti dress did the trick. Its elaborately designed jewelled front and silver-threaded pattern is sufficiently glamorous for minimal fuss on my part. I simply paired it with vintage inspired silver shoes, and finished the look with a crystal hair-pin on my braid. That’s the beauty of strong statement garments like this dress – they work for you.

* Along with Wednesday’s pictures, I’ve included some pics of how I wore this dress in the past. The last picture is of Marisa Tomei wearing a similar Alberta Ferretti dress from the same collection.

The wind posed a serious challenge to my picture-taking experience today because the bow, which is arguably the focal point of this look, just wouldn’t stay in place. What you are seeing here is not exactly what I had envisioned in terms of the dress’s silhouette and composition of the pictures. I was thinking of cleaner, more defined lines which is what I saw in the mirror at home. Under the influence of the wind, the shape of this loose a-line dress and the bow became unidentifiable. Lol, surprisingly nature has no regard for my ‘artistic vision’ (note the sarcasm please). Anyway, “all is well that ends well.” Even though my plan was undermined I’m quite content with the result, especially because I got a chance to wear my new Marni tweed platforms.

These are by far the highest pumps I own. I found a post about these ‘babies’ on another blog where the writer describes them by saying that “the trend towards shape, tailoring, and architecture melds into a houndstooth tweed, leather and wood block heeled platform by Marni.” I read that and thought, “what he said.”

Follow Up: Someone asked me what colour nail polish I was wearing. The brand of the nail polish is Essie and the colour is called Lacy not Racy. Maybe from now on I will start adding this type of information in the “what I’m wearing” part of the posts.
