Our first morning in Cuba was just as warm and bright as I had hoped for. We stayed at Melia Las Antillas in Varadero – an adults only resort about 2.5 hours from Havana. As soon as we arrived, our internal clock seemed to have instinctively switched to “vacation mode” because the concept of time seemed especially relative and unimportant – a mental state that in Cuba promotes both relaxation and…hunger. We kept missing breakfast for the first half of the vacation so our mornings began with a cappuccino or Spanish coffee and a brownie; talk about a well balanced diet.

This was my first day look of the trip. The tropics are all about vibrancy and color so I added the headscarf and the bright green earrings for a little boost of both.

On Sunday we decided to pay yet another visit to the “Starving Artist Bar” for brunch and in tune with its untraditional, edgy vibe, I felt like rebelling against my own natural inclinations and wearing something in a way that is new to me. When looking though my closet(s), I stumbled upon the orange, wrinkled Marni skirt that I used for the Revolve contest and instinctively began to look for some silk top to pair it with. This is where that momentary rebellion kicked in and settled on the Junk Food tee. Over my university years, my collection of Junk Food vintage-inspired, graphic tees grew pretty large but I hardly even glance in their direction now a days. The revival of one of those long forgotten tees, in combination with this wild skirt, culminated in what I call “Marni junk food’ because that’s basically what this look is is in multiples senses of its meaning.

I spent the entire day on set yesterday and while I wasn’t able to take picture in costume, I snapped some shots with my iphone in 60s hair and makeup. The clothes in the pictures are of what I wore on the way to set, before changing into wardrobe – casual and simple. After they finished with me in the hair and makeup truck, I spent as long as I possibly could in my own clothes because I knew that once that stretch-less, fitted, vintage dress comes on, that’s it for my sense of comfort. It was within this time window that this mini-photo-shoot took place. So in a way, by default, this post ends up being a marriage of the vintage and the contemporary; the old and the new.

Interestingly enough, this chance ensemble exemplifies my approach to vintage-inspired looks in a sense that I aim for fusion rather than complete recreation. For example if I’m wearing a 60s style dress I would be careful not to indulge in vintage accessories because that tends to look too dated and costume like. The balance is in ‘reminiscing’ rather than looking like you’re stuck in that era.

* btw, I don’t actually smoke, the cigarette I’m holding is kind of my prop. For those cigarette pics I was imagining a fed-up 60s housewife who needed to get out of the house.

A few days ago our dear friend Roma flew to Rostov-na-Donu, Russia, which is where he is originally from. He is potentially planning to stay there for over half a year or longer so a little group of us got together for a something of a “going away and come back soon party.” As is often the case, I found out about this little soirée pretty late and I had about 20 minutes to get ready. I notices that in situations such as these I usually reach for an a-line dress, long necklace, and heels. To me, this is just bulletproof and one of the most hassle-free; maybe because it feels relaxed and chic at the same time.

My day started pleasant and slow enough, but turned into a “marathon” right after breakfast on our practically shadeless backyard patio. First it was the yogafusion, which seemed more intense and painful than ever. From class I drove straight to my hair appointment, bank appointment, auto body shop, grocery store, and then straight home to get ready for the last opera of the season, sushi, and now the post. The 34C and humidity didn’t exactly help the matter but in the end it was an amazing day actually. My little car and I got to spend some quality time together – windows down, old-school hip-hop tunes, the breeze. By the way, apparently today’s Toronto weather broke records for the highest temperatures on May 26 since 1937. I’m glad my Acura and I were there to witness this historic warming moment.

I called today’s look “the shell game” because of its unconventional statement piece. My crafty mama made this immoderately long shell necklace from about 5 regular sized necklaces bought on our last family trip to Cuba. Originally they all came in single tones and we had the idea of mixing together the colours and the necklaces themselves into one long, colourful piece. We couldn’t find much use for them in their original state because, quite frankly, they looked a little too boring and safe. When I saw the end-result I couldn’t wait to put it to use and today’s weather and summer vibe presented the perfect opportunity.

My dear Cuba,

If I can’t come to you, I’ll have you come to me.

Love,
Taras modified the recipe for the sangria, with the base being comprised of rhubarb compote (fresh from the garden) – sort of a Russian take on a Spanish classic. He then added gin, red wine, maple syrup, and lots of raspberries. You could tell it was made with love…insanely delicious. The sangria just kept pouring and pouring to the sound of the Buena Vista Social Club. If it wasn’t for all the leaf trees I might have forgotten for moment that I was in Canada.

After doing the Junya Watanabe inspiration post yesterday I felt ready to take on that gingham checks jacket I talked about. This morning I took on the challenge of making Watanabe’s design “everyday appropriate.” I believe that no matter how unusual or eccentric a piece might appear on the runway, it always has the potential to be a lot more wearable depending on how it’s styled. For example, the jacket that I’m wearing here looked like this on the runway (only in blue). It’s not as ‘Ready-to-Wear’ as the name might imply, so it’s up to us, ‘the wearers,’ to make the pieces work.

What I did in this look was balance all the complex elements of the jacket by pairing it with simple shorts, necklace, and pumps. The asymmetrical collar, twisted fabric, and untraditional button closure of the dominant piece were met by clean lines and neutrality of everything else. This might be a safe approach, but it’s also a good starting point for further exploration. Once you have the main balancing elements down you can start to push the limits one accessory at a time.

What I’m wearing:

All the guests just left and the baby shower is officially over. I think it turned out pretty well; everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and my party favors were a big hit .

This is what I came up with:

Since we’re expecting a little baby girl, I wanted to keep everything playfully girly. I packed a sparkly make-up case by Steph&co (created by the team of Stephanie Johnson) with Becca eye-shadow, dark chocolates, and hand cream. In order to suit all tastes I chose relatively neutral colours for the eye-shadows and scentless cream. Gift giving always makes me so excited.

And speaking of…there are only 3 days left to enter the leggings giveaway draw. Good luck guys!

What I’m wearing:

Silk dress by “Chloe”

Straw pumps by “Betsey Johnson” (last seen in Apr. 3’10)

2 vintage rings (bought on DealitLive.com)

Headband from “Urban Outfitters”

Gold necklace

* the nail polish colour is called “mod squad” and the brand is “Essie”
