As part of a greater effort to introduce some balance to my life this semester, I’ve made a tradition out of spending a day in San Francisco every weekend. I’m still recovering from the “awe” of my first trip to San Fran last summer but its gorgeousness never fails to reaffirm that first impression. Walking up the hills is a little tricky in such high heels but I manage – I’ll take it all!

draping

I’m really loving draping silhouettes this fall and I think I might even have my predominant look of the season figured out. It’s going to be all about the juxtaposition of light versus heavy and thick versus thin. Silk dresses with tights and heavy boots, layered with a suede or fur vest. Umm, can’t wait for my vision to materialize. Maybe next week…

Muted Neutrality

It’s damp and grey in Toronto today and I felt like being equally as muted. The Alberta Ferretti top I’m wearing in today’s pictures is actually from my mom’s closet. I ‘borrowed’ it, sort of speak, without her knowing…you think she’ll notice? Considering that she is on the site five times a day and is probably my ‘biggest fan’ I doubt it will get by her . The top has stunning brooch design in the front and is made of the softest cashmere ever – I couldn’t resist.

March Dreaming

It’s finally March! We made it to spring my friends. I just wish that it would automatically mean that we could start wearing spring clothes but the weather in Toronto still leaves something to be desired. I am beginning to run out of ideas for winter looks, or maybe I’ve just developed some sort of a subconscious reluctance towards winter clothes. As though it’s going to somehow speed up the warming process…a little backwards don’t you think. This look-of-a-day illustrates some of that reluctance because despite all of the brown tones I still avoided layering the Michael Kors top over something simple and long-sleeve, as I would have normally done.

Chocolate Brown Delight

After finishing this post I will be driving out to see an old friend of mine, Alissa, who just had a baby. I haven’t seen her since she moved outside of Toronto to the countryside in preparation for her little one. For as long as I could remember she has been a quintessential “city girl,” a fashionable “from lattes to pilates” kind of chica. She keeps insisting that I need a GPS to find her now . It will be interesting to see her outside of her element, and considering that she is planning on moving back soon the opportunity won’t last too long.

Today’s-look-of-the-day is filled with chocolate hues. The pattered shirt is the visually dominant piece and the rest of the garments were chosen with this in mind. The vest, top, tights, and pumps are relatively simple and are congruent with the skirt in their colour tonality. Patterns are fun but should be approached with caution because competing patterns are often a recipe for a messy disaster.

Texture Forward

So far I’ve touched on issues of colour and cut but not texture. Texture plays a pretty important role in the aesthetic effect of a garment by contributing to its detail (or lack there of), shape, and general impression. I love this Prada dress for its unique and almost enchanting use of texture, which has been described as “the extraordinary fabrics woven to change from black to bubbly outcrops of rocky brown.” There is something so rebellious about it. So unsexy but sophisticated. ”Simple but strange.”
