A few years ago I remember walking into a discount store in Toronto and seeing – amongst general mediocracy of everything else – what appeared to be a skirt from another world. A world of luxury, craftsmanship, elegance, and class. I was in a state of complete awe and astonishment. Within this trance from couture bewitchment, I longed to get lost in this mysterious world – the world of Balenciaga!

Balenciaga is a fashion house  founded by a Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga. After coming in contact with any of Balenciaga’s gorgeous creations, his reputation “as a couturier of uncompromising standards” reaffirms itself. It’s also not surprising that Christian Dior referred to Cristobal as “the master of us all.” I consider his Spring 2008 and Resort 2010 collections fashion masterpieces because they best embody the characteristics of his work that I first fell in love with. Within the Balenciaga aesthetic, I’m especially fascinated by the sculpture-like shapes with the “standout shoulder lines, hand-span waists, and belled hip volumes” – it’s modernity meets femininity at it’s best!

Here are some of  my favourite pieces from Balenciaga’s Resort and Spring collections. Enjoy my lovelies!
