After doing the Junya Watanabe inspiration post yesterday I felt ready to take on that gingham checks jacket I talked about. This morning I took on the challenge of making Watanabe’s design “everyday appropriate.” I believe that no matter how unusual or eccentric a piece might appear on the runway, it always has the potential to be a lot more wearable depending on how it’s styled. For example, the jacket that I’m wearing here looked like this on the runway (only in blue). It’s not as ‘Ready-to-Wear’ as the name might imply, so it’s up to us, ‘the wearers,’ to make the pieces work.
What I did in this look was balance all the complex elements of the jacket by pairing it with simple shorts, necklace, and pumps. The asymmetrical collar, twisted fabric, and untraditional button closure of the dominant piece were met by clean lines and neutrality of everything else. This might be a safe approach, but it’s also a good starting point for further exploration. Once you have the main balancing elements down you can start to push the limits one accessory at a time.

- High-waisted shorts by “Marciano”
- Summer straw pumps by “Betsey Johnson” (last seen in May 2’10)
- 2 vintage rings (bought on www.dealitlive.com) (last seen in May 2’10)
- multistrand pearl necklace
Can I just say that you truly have a TALENT when it comes to styling an outfit. This outfit is absolutely beautifully styled. I could not have envisioned it put together any better and you are right, you have done it in such a way that it can be worn off the runway. Beautiful.
